I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge — that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. —Ephesians 3:17-19

Thoughts on Today’s Verse…

Love that surpasses knowledge. That’s very difficult to explain, but when you have loved your spouse for decades and he or she is as close to you as any bodily organ, you experience what this means. When you love a child and do what you never dreamed you could do for another human being, you understand this phrase. And when you stand before God, adopted as a full heir of all his great riches, a full sibling to Jesus Christ the Lord, and know you are seen as holy, without reproach, and blameless, you begin to understand this phrase.

 

My Prayer…

Holy and incredible God, help me to know in my soul the love that is greater than words and knowledge so that I may not only be like you, but that I may know you in experience just as I know you in faith. Through Jesus I pray. Amen.

And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know that this love that surpasses knowledge – that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”

    The Holy Spirit takes up residence in every Christian upon salvation (John 14:23, Revelation 3:20), giving us the power that we need to become “rooted and established”, or mature, in Christ. When we listen to the Holy Spirit and follow His promptings in our lives, we are pleasing God and making a home for Him in ALL of the areas of our being! As I have shared before, if we take the view for example that our heart or life is a house, we would be granting Him access to every single room and closet in our “house”, making Him at home there instead of barring Him from certain places in our home. The more we are strengthened by the Holy Spirit, the more we will become like Jesus, and we enter into full enjoyment of His indwelling through faith!

    God, since the Garden of Eden, has cared about the state of man’s heart. He wants His children to have their hearts (lives) centered on Him. It is all too easy to get caught in the trap as Christians, to basing our obedience to God on our works. We can do all the good works that God calls us to do, but if they are done with the wrong motives, they are of no value to God. However, when our hearts are centered on Christ and His great love for us, godly lives will be the natural outcome. Then He is delighted in our good works because the reason we are doing them is our love for Him!

    I love the last part of this passage, that we may grasp how wide, long, high, and deep the love of Christ really is, and that this love of His surpasses knowledge! There are many, many things that our human brains are taught from the time we are born. But to truly grasp the love that Christ has for us is by far the very most important one. From this understanding will come a life that is centered on Christ and obeying His Word because of our love for Him and His finished work on the cross for our salvation.
    Oh, that our life would be spent at the feet of Jesus, loving Him, learning from Him, and showing that love to all who come into contact with us each and every day. Then when He comes to take us home to Himself through death or His coming again, we can stand before Him as an obedient child and He will say, “Well done good and faithful servant!”

    Thank You Jesus for Your love for me, for coming to this earth and shedding Your precious, life-giving blood for my sins, I love You my Redeemer and I give you all the praise, glory, and honor that You so richly deserve this day, Amen!
