Verse of the Day

The Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost. —Luke 19:10

Luke 19:10

Thoughts on Today’s Verse…

“The Friend of Sinners.” Of all the things Jesus was called, I believe that was his favorite. Come to think of it, I believe it’s my favorite, too!

My Prayer…

Father, while I know you hate sin and the havoc it creates in our lives, I am so thankful that when you came to earth you were not our judge but our Savior, you were our friend. I promise to live today more aware of your love for the lost because I know what it means to be found. Through Jesus my Lord, I pray. Amen.

  1. Luke 19:10
“For the Son of man came to seek and to save what was lost.”

The “lost” includes every single human being that was ever born. Therefore Jesus came to save ALL who place their faith in Him and His bloodshed for the forgiveness of their sins. No one is excluded from receiving Him by faith, the choice is on the part of every individual to accept the free gift of salvation (Ephesians 2:8-9) and spend eternity in heaven, or reject it and spend eternity in hell.

As God’s children, we have the privilege of taking the good news of the gospel to the yet unsaved. It is our natural inclination to be spend time around those who know Jesus as Savior, but Jesus reminds us in this verse of just why He came to this world in the first place. He came to save the lost. So, we should not just keep to ourselves as Christians, but reach out to the lost and show them the love of Christ in our lives.
However, I am not suggesting that as Christians we surround ourselves with ungodly people. As always, we must look at Jesus’ life, He witnessed to many ungodly people, He ate with them, spent time with them, talked at length with them, and counseled them, but His close friends and “inner circle” were believers.

This is exactly how we are to conduct ourselves as well. We should not have close personal friends that live ungodly lives, there are many warnings in Scripture about that, but we must interact with the unsaved so we can share the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ with them.
This is a fine line to walk. I have seen some really well-meaning Christians who were only trying to help some unsaved “friends” in their life come to know Jesus, and got caught up in the sinful ways of the very person they were trying to help! It is crucial to keep a godly network of people in our lives who can pray for us and support us with a good dose of accountability when we are in the situation of spending a lot of time around an ungodly person. We still have that old nature in us that can very easily get caught up in the wicked ways of this world if we are not extremely careful by staying in close communication with God through His Word and much prayer.

This verse is very short and quite profound, Christ came to seek and to save the lost. Praise His name for all the love He has shown by providing the only way to God through His sacrifice on the cross!
If you would like to read some verses on salvation here are a few to look up:
    Ephesians 2:8-9, John 5:24, Romans 10:9-13, 1John 1:7, and 1Peter 1:18-19.

Thank You Jesus for coming to this earth and for shedding Your precious blood for the forgiveness of my sins. I pray that if there are those reading this today that do not know You as Savior that they would place their faith in You right now and enjoy an eternity with You instead of an eternity that is separated from You in hell. I love You so my Redeemer and my Deliverer, and I praise You this day, Amen!
