Verse of the Day

The day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives. —2 Peter 3:10-11

Thoughts on Today’s Verse…

Holiness is that forgotten character virtue that is the Christian’s reflection of God, his or her holy and righteous Father. In a day when grace is so easily cheapened, when anything goes just as long as we want to be buddies with Jesus, Peter’s words should shock us into reverence — the holy commitment to set our lives apart from the evil and satanic sludge that defiles our world and to offer our bodies, hearts, and minds to do his will and reflect his character.

My Prayer…

Holy and Righteous Father, teach me to do your will and reflect your character while offering your grace to others. May the movements of my heart, the thoughts of my mind, and the actions of my life be pleasing to you and reflect your holiness and grace. In Jesus’ holy name I pray. Amen.

  1. God will send Christ to this earth to destroy it one day. The day of the Lord will come as a thief – that is unexpectedly and destructively. If you know Jesus as Savior however you will not be here to experience that! We who know Christ will be in heaven when all this takes place. The unsaved will be caught off-guard by His second coming and the devastation that will take place on this earth. But we who know Christ should not be caught off guard, we can look at the signs of His coming and live our lives as though He is coming today…for He just might!

Knowing that all the material things of this world will pass away, what should our focus be on? Common sense would tell us that it should be on Christ and spiritual matters which are eternal, instead of the glitz and glamour of the temporary material possessions and powers of this life. Our emphasis should be on the eternal, not the passing away! We ought to be purposing to live holy and godly lives through the indwelling Holy Spirit, diligently seeking to do the will of God in this life while we may.
Mankind scoffs at the second coming of Christ, but the Word of God says He will come, and rest assured, He will. If you look back at the Old Testament it doesn’t take long to see that every promise God made was kept, but many times it took hundreds of years to come to fruition. He said He would flood the earth, and He did. He said He would rescue the children of Israel from Egypt and He did. He said that He would send the promised Messiah, and He did. And there are many, many more recorded promises fulfilled. God can be trusted to do exactly what He says He will do every single time, without question!

So the next time someone scoffs at the coming of Christ, or maybe you even start to doubt that He is ever coming back, just remember the mercy of God and that he is not willing that any should perish. God will indeed send Jesus to take His church at just the right time, and only He knows when that will be.
It may be today, are you ready? Unless you have placed your faith in the blood of Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, you will be left behind to all the horrors of what will take place on this earth, and an eternity in hell thereafter. Please accept the free gift that Christ is offering you today before it is forever too late. John 3:16, Ephesians 2:8-9, Romans 10:9-10, and Acts 16:31 are excellent verses to read in God’s Word on salvation, if you have never read them please look them up and claim them as your very own today. God loves you so much and desires for you to be in heaven with Him one day, what will your answer be to His call?

Thank You Jesus for dying for my sins, thank You for Your faithfulness to Your Word and that You always do just as You say You will. Help me to always live my life in obedience to You and to bring honor and glory to Your name all the days of my life. I love You my precious Lord and Savior, and I give You praise this day! Amen.

A Veiled Understanding
