What Does John 13:13 Mean?

“You call Me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am. John 13:13(NASB)

John 13:13

Verse Thoughts
Some of the claims that Christ made would have been downright arrogant if they had not been true, but every sign He performed was the direct fulfilment of an Old Testament prophecy that was the identifying signature of the Jewish Messiah. He proved over and again that He was Who He said He was; Son of God and Son of Man, God incarnate, the Messiah of Israel, and Saviour of the World.

He had just broken the bread and passed the cup saying, “This is My body and blood that is given for you,” and He had just washed the feet of those He had trained for 3 long years, yet they did not understand. They called Him Master, Teacher, Rabbi, Lord, and it had even been revealed to Peter that He was the Christ; the Seed of the woman, the anointed of God, the Messiah of Israel, and Son of the living God, yet still they did not understand. And so Jesus set about explaining in detail Who He was and What He represented: “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am.”

He was the Teacher of Israel about Whom Moses predicted. He was David’s Lord Who was to be given the throne of glory. He was the One about Whom John the Baptist declared, “Behold the Lamb of God, Who takes away the sin of the world.” He was the Christ, the Son of the Living God.

Jesus was both Son of Man and Son of God – fully human yet fully God, of one Being with the Father through Whom all things were made, Who for us men and our salvation came down from heaven to be our Teacher, our Lord, our Saviour, and our God. We have been brought into the family of God and intimately joined to Christ, as His Body and Bride, to be His eternal witness to His eternal goodness of His never-ending grace.

We have been called, chosen, justified, sanctified, and glorified as His witnesses so that in the coming ages He might show the incomparable riches of his grace expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus – the One that we call Teacher and Lord, Saviour, and Friend.

My Prayer
Loving Father, sometimes I become so familiar with walking with You, day by day, that I forget the wonder of Who You truly are. Excite in me a wonderment of Who You truly are and the amazing grace that has been bestowed upon me. May I live a life to the praise and glory of your wonderful grace. In Jesus’ name I pray, AMEN.

Bible References

13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.

28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Not of works, lest any man should boast.

10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

11 Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;

12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:

13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;

15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;

16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:

17 And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.

18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;

20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;

21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:

22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.
