Unique Authority
Scripture is the unique authority in prophecy, in science – in living and in dying. Scripture is the only directive that we should adopt to live our lives. Scripture is the one plum-line that we should use to develop doctrine – but beware lest the study of scripture diverts you from the Subject of scripture.
Subject of Scripture
Jesus said to those that rejected Him, “You search the Scriptures: because you believe they give you eternal life, but the Scriptures point to Me!”– John 5:39 All scripture points to the Lord Jesus Christ – science, prophecy, life, and death must all have Christ as the one, unique focal point. Scripture tells us how to live – how to die – how to overcome – how to be faithful – how to be faithful. Adopt any other strategy, or mix in your opinions and you develop a different doctrine.
Hindrances
Martha was bothered and worried and troubled about by many things, but in her bothering and in her busyness she missed the vital presence of God. We are all like Martha – bothered, worried, and troubled about by many things, and like her, all our botherings become hindrances in our relationship with Jesus.
Knowing God
But scripture tells us how to live our lives victoriously and wisely. We are first and foremost to lay aside every hindrance to discipleship. We are to put away everything that diverts us away from our life-calling, and the life into which we are all called is to know God and to know Christ. This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, Whom You have sent. John 17:3
Diversions
This does not mean we are only to lay aside things we are not bothered about. It means that we are to lay aside the things in our lives that do bother us! We are to examine our lives and recognise the things that are hindering our calling. We are to strip off all those hindrances –all that bothers – all that weighs us down. We are to pair away everything that diverts us away from knowing Jesus.
Resolutions
This is a positive action that we are to undertake – it will not simply happen. This is a decision of the will – it is a resolution we need to make in our minds. God will not force His mind, His thoughts, or His will on an unwilling servant, and yet we are exhorted to let the mind of Christ dwell in us richly. This will not simply happen, but it is a decision of the will as we walk in spirit and truth.
Conscious Weights
We need to pray, ‘Thy will not mine be done’, but that prayer is a choice – a choice you will make or a choice you will spurn. Some weights are certainly sinful but by no means are all weights sinful. Some weights weigh us down unnoticed and are like shackles on the feet of a slave. Some weights we are conscious of and need to deliberately set them aside.
Unconscious Weights
Other things are unconscious weights, which may have built up over many years. Such unconscious weights can become a way of life – such unconscious hindrances can weigh us down. The carnal mind often cries out for rest, recreation, security – not recognising these may all be shackles, hindrances – things to be laid aside.
Bothersome Things
Time can also be a big hindrance to which we all so stubbornly cling. Time is often filled with all things that bother us all so much. But remember..what Jesus said, Martha, Martha, you are anxious and bothered about many things.
Spiritual Progress
The believer is exhorted to lay aside all that makes us anxious or bothered, for Scripture indicates that the faithful servant must lay aside every weight. Cast all your weights – all your burdens upon Me. We need to scrutinise our lives to uncover the things that bother us. We all need to lay aside everything that hinders our spiritual progress. We need to ask Jesus to show us the encumbrances in our own lives – and tell Him that with His guidance we are willing to lay them all at His feet.

4 None calleth for justice, nor any pleadeth for truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity.

35 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it.
36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
38 Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.
Titus 2
2 But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:
2 That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.
3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.
6 Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded.
7 In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,
8 Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.
9 Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again;
10 Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.
11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.
15 These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.
Titus 3
3 Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work,
2 To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.
3 For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.
4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,
5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;
7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
8 This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.
9 But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.
10 A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject;
11 Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself.
12 When I shall send Artemas unto thee, or Tychicus, be diligent to come unto me to Nicopolis: for I have determined there to winter.
13 Bring Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their journey diligently, that nothing be wanting unto them.

3 Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
4 I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ;

6 Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you:

22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:

24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.
25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;
