This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us — whatever we ask — we know that we have what we asked of him.

—1 John 5:14-15

1 John 5:14-15
This is the assurance we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us – whatever we ask – we know that we have what we asked for.

When we know that we have eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ, we can go before the throne of God in prayer with confidence because we are His children. As His dearly loved children He wants to hear our requests and petitions. Coming to Him and asking for things in line with His perfect will is the key to this verse. God is not just a big “santa claus” in the sky who gives us every little whim and wish we ask for, as the world portrays Him most times. As any good Parent, He will give us only what will help us, and we are to desire only those answers to our prayers that are His plan for our lives, even if that goes against our own plans. We cannot always know what is best for us, but He certainly does, He sees our lives from first breath to last, and knows the paths that are good for us and those which would make us miserable in the long run. When we trust Him for the course of our lives we can rest assured that the outcome will be excellent!

So, you may say, “How do I know what God’s will is?” We have His Word the Bible which gives us much instruction in life. When we study and meditate upon it the Holy Spirit that indwells us will reveal to us the very will of God for our lives. Also through prayer, when I am faced with a decision that I must make in life I ask the Lord what I should do, it is amazing how His peace will settle over me when I have chosen His will, and how I do NOT have peace when I have not chosen His will. Every day we should pray for wisdom (James 1:5) to live our lives in His will so that we can bring honor and glory to Him, be a blessing to those around us, and enjoy our life on this earth to the very fullest!

Thank You Father God for Your excellent plan for my life. Give me wisdom to follow that plan everyday as I seek to please You and to know when I am going off course and get back into Your will, leaving my imperfect plan behind. I love You Abba Father, and I praise You this day, Amen!
