Bible Verse of the Day

The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. —1 Corinthians 2:14

Thoughts on Today’s Verse…

The Holy Spirit is God’s abiding gift, God’s seal and promise. The Spirit is our assurance that what he began with Jesus’ sacrificial death and our participation in it through faith and baptism, he will bring to completion at Jesus’ return. But the world cannot understand this great promise, just like it cannot understand much of Scripture. Without the gift of the Holy Spirit, their eyes only see what they can touch with their fingers and cannot fully see what is true in God’s heart and revealed in his Word.

My Prayer…

Father, I thank you for sending Jesus. Jesus, I thank you for sending the Spirit. Spirit, I thank you for never leaving me alone. As I am filled with the Spirit, O Lord, so fill me more and more until my will and my life more perfectly reflect your desires and character. Use me to bless others just as your presence now blesses me. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

  1. 1 Corinthians 2:14
The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.

In this chapter of 1 Corinthians Paul is teaching on the vital importance of the Holy Spirit which indwells those who place their faith in Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit reveals God’s Word to us and empowers us as we read, study, and apply it to our lives through obedience.
The unsaved cannot understand the Bible without the aid of the Holy Spirit, to them the things of God are foolishness. This is a good thing to remember when sharing the gospel with an individual. I have experienced this from time to time when talking to the unsaved about Jesus.

This one woman stands out in my mind that I opened my Bible and shared with some years ago. She just could not accept the fact that all mankind were born sinners in need of a Savior. I showed her verse after verse which says that we do need a Savior, but she just couldn’t wrap her head around it. I started praying for this person regularly, a few weeks later I shared with her again and it was like someone flipped a light switch on and she understood what the Word of God was saying and accepted Christ right then and there! The Holy Spirit was that “light switch”, He revealed to her what the verses were saying and she repented of her sins and was saved. What had been foolishness to her before, was now the most wise words she had ever read!
We can and should share God’s Word with the unsaved, but we must keep in mind that we cannot get anyone to understand the things of God, that is solely the work of the Holy Spirit. He, and only He can move in a person’s heart and open their eyes to the truth.

The world around us will look at what we believe as foolishness. Some will mock Jesus, and be very unkind to us for standing for Him. This always shocks me when I hear my Savior mocked, but it really shouldn’t, God’s Word tells us that the unsaved will behave this way, their eyes are blinded by satan and until the Holy Spirit removes the blinders, they will feel and act this way. We, however, should not lose heart, but continue to spread God’s Word to the yet unsaved for even though many will reject Him, some will accept the free gift of salvation that He is offering!

Thank You Father God for sending Jesus to die for my sins and for sending Your indwelling Holy Spirit to reveal Your Word and ways to me. I pray that You help me to obey You in all things for I love You so and give You all the praise, glory, and honor this day, Amen!
