Bible Verse of the Day

In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. —Romans 6:11-12

Thoughts on Today’s Verse…

If we have been cleansed from perversity, if we have died with Christ in baptism and have been cleansed thoroughly and completely by the Holy Spirit, then let’s live for God! Let’s resist sin, and our inclination to sin, with all our might, knowing that as we do, the Holy Spirit will empower us to a much greater righteousness than we could ever live on our own. Let’s begin each day with a conscious decision to be dead to our sinful past and alive to the goal of the holy character of God!

My Prayer…

Loving and Righteous Father, Almighty God, help my heart remain firmly committed to your will and more fully conformed to your holy character and grace. In the name of Jesus, my Savior and my Lord. Amen.

  1. Romans 6:11-12
In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore, do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires.

Simply put this means that when we are faced with temptation to sin, the temptation should have the effect on us as it would a dead person. In previous verses in this chapter, Paul has described how we stand positionally before God, now he points to how this is lived out in our lives.
This verse goes hand in hand with:
    Romans 12:2
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – His good, pleasing, and perfect will.

If we are truly “dead” to sin, we are to go about “living” for Christ, by not conforming and behaving like the unsaved around us. When a person accepts Christ as Lord and Savior a change happens, the Holy Spirit of God takes up residence inside of them. No longer can a person who has honestly been born again continue to live in sinful ways and not be convicted by the Spirit for doing so. We will still sin, but when the Holy Spirit makes us aware of that sin we are to do as 1John 1:9 says and confess it to God.
We have all know people who claim to know Christ as Lord yet there is absolutely no evidence in their lives that they have ever been born again. They continue to behave exactly like the unsaved with no conscious thought of having sinned before God. Those are who Christ refers to in Matthew 7:21-23, they are perhaps very “religious” people, but they have never come to saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, they have a profession not a possession!

Those of us who call God Father through faith in Jesus Christ should purpose in our hearts and lives to live solely for Him. Turning our backs on the ways of the world, yet going into the world to share Jesus with them. We are to be IN the world but not OF the world. Our Master is God and our lives should show it, when they look at us they should see a picture of Christ in our words and actions!

Thank You Jesus for dying for me, thank you for loving me and for Your indwelling Holy Spirit. Help me to be dead to sin and alive to God, therefore being a true reflection of You each and every day; I love You so my Savior and Redeemer, the Author and Finisher of my faith! Amen.
