Verse of the Day

Praise the LORD, O my soul. I will praise the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. —Psalm 146:1-2

Psalm 146:1-2

Thoughts on Today’s Verse…

“Hallelujah!” This is a hallelujah Psalm! “Praise the LORD” is our translation for “Hallelujah!” but it sure doesn’t seem to carry that heavenly oomph that we feel with singing or shouting “Hallelujah!” What I love about this Psalm are the dimensions of praise given here: my soulall my life, and as long as I live. The psalmist, and the Holy Spirit who inspired him, want us to realize that praise must be all-encompassing. Our lives are to be a “holy praise” to the LORD as long as we have breath! So how’s your praise? Have you only been letting it out at church? Mmmm, maybe it’s time to let the rest of your life have a few hallelujah as you praise the LORD with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength!

My Prayer…

I praise you, God of Israel and God of the Covenant, for your mighty work bringing salvation through Israel to all nations in Jesus Christ. My heart praises you for your joy and comfort, my head praises you for all your wondrous creations, my soul praises you for your abiding presence through the Holy Spirit, and my strength praises you with the work of my hands. Please hear my life, heart, and voice as they all cry, “Hallelujah!” to you, who alone is God! In the name of the Messiah Jesus, I say, “Hallelujah and Amen.”

Praise the Lord, O my soul. I will praise the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.

I love how the psalmist is somewhat talking to himself in these first two verses. First he says; “Praise the Lord O my soul.” He is directing himself to praise God. Then in answer to himself he says, “I will praise the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to God as long as I live.” Now he states, not only will I praise the Lord right now, I will praise Him all my life…and furthermore, I will not just praise Him in words I will also sing my praises to God forevermore!
How this attitude of abundant praise must please God! The guy’s heart is just bursting with praise and joy before his awesome God. They are not sure who penned this Psalm, but I vote for David, it sure sounds like his narrative in other Psalms. But no matter who wrote it, the Holy Spirit inspired it and we should pay close attention to it. He goes on in the chapter to list some of the many attributes of the God of Jacob, the one and only true and living God that we serve!

We all have bad days, days when things are just going in a different direction than we would like. On those days, how it helps to just stop all the negative thoughts and start praising God for the blessings that He has shown us in life. For all the protection He gives, the needs that He meets, and for all that love that He shows us in numerous ways daily. He sent Jesus, His only Son, to die for our sins so that we can spend eternity in heaven instead of hell when we leave this world. We can always praise Him for that no matter our current circumstances in life!

What a glorious and loving God we worship. I will never cease to be amazed that He loves me, but I am so very glad that He does and that I can call Him Father, and He calls me His child. Praise His Holy name!

My wonderful Abba Father, how I love You! Thank You for Your care and keeping of me throughout my life, thank You for loving me, for forgiving my sins, and for never forsaking me. I give You all my heart felt praise this day, Amen!

Amen.
